1-19-10 CO Alarm

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

1-19-2010- NWVFD was alerted for a carbon monoxide investigation on Beckett Park, North Warren. Lieutenant Blain Williams responded Engine 8’s crew to the scene and assumed command. After it was determined that all occupants were evacuated from the structure, crews began their investigation. Dangerous levels of CO were found at the entrance of the structure requiring crews to utilize their Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA) to complete the investigation. During their search, E8’s Interior crew found the root cause of the alarm to be incomplete combustion taking place in a natural gas powered forced air furnace. The furnace was removed from service and crews began to ventilate the structure. After the residence was deemed free of carbon monoxide, E8 and crew returned to quarters without incident.

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

1-1-2010-NWVFD was dispatched for a carbon monoxide investigation at a private residence on Dutch Hill Road. Crews assembled and NW E8 responded with 5. Moments after leaving the station, E8 received a scene report from Assistant Chief John Riggle reporting an active CO alarm inside a single family dwelling, with all occupants evacuated, and no illnesses. The E8 crew found the structure to be free of CO and upon further investigation found the root cause of the alarm to be a battery failure in an alarm. Chief Riggle and Lieutenant M. Wadlow returned the alarm to a useable state, provided the home owner with information regarding CO Detector maintenance as well as a Carbon Monoxide Awarness pamphlet, and provided the homeowner with a CO detector for use until their unit could be replaced.
